L'Aquila lies at base of the remains of castle Montemiccioli. This castle dates back to 929 (A.D.) and has played the role as fortress and defense bunker for centuries in the past. As a historic landmark, Montemiccioli is recognized as the inspiration behind the works of the famous Italian painter Niccolo Cannicci, who spent his final years on the same grounds. With the Mediterranean one-hour away, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of green and yellow rolling Tuscan hills dissipating in to the distant brilliant blue of the Mediterranean sea. The history of Montemiccioli dates back to the Etruscan era, yet the first documentation dates to August 30, 929 A.D., when Ugo di Provenza, (King of Italy; 926-946) donated this little town named "Monte della Torre" (Mount of the Tower) to Adelardo, the Bishop of Volterra. During this era Bishops were very powerful, and protected the cities from the Barbarian’s attacks. Montemiccioli has always been the center of conflict between the nearby towns of Volterra and San Gimignano, typically over tolls the Bishop would collect from people crossing the town border and the town’s disputes over the border itself. In 1200 A.D. Adelardo named Montemiccioli "Castello di San Vittore"(Castle of Sant Vittore). During the XIII th. Century, the town was named "Castel del Popolo"(Castle of the People) after freedom from the Bishops’rule. Since that time, Montemiccioli is known for the shape of the remains of a standing tower and the magnificent view and unforgettable sunset. With less than twenty residents, you will truly feel the old world charm of this tranquil region. High a top a hill from the town of Montemiccioli you are surrounded by the woods of Berignone and the neighboring hill-top towns of Casole, Colle Val D’elsa, San Gimignano and Volterra. |
